My earliest musical memories are, as a pre-schooler growing up in Pahiatua, of excitedly following the local pipe band and playing 78s on the family turn-table. Then came The Beatles airwave domination and musical theatre in Palmerston North. Consequently my musical tastes are varied and eclectic - from Puccini, through Porter to Pink Floyd - with a fair dollop of jazz thrown in! While the children were learning piano, clarinet, 'cello, drums and trumpet, I took up the tenor saxophone. On moving to Hawke's Bay I joined the Hawke's Bay Jazz Club and then the Big Band. It's a great buzz every week to sit down at rehearsal and have the Big Band light up around you as you swing into yet another great jazz standard.
In TWO FOR JAZZ, I play twin spin jazz with a theme that links the two tracks together. The theme may be something simple like the same artist, album, or composer; two different takes on the same tune or subject; or some far more quirky or cryptic link.
In the course of TWO FOR JAZZ, I hope to play tunes that you'll love and tunes that will give you a greater appreciation of jazz through its many and varied forms.
There's a new programme every fortnight; on the in-between weeks you can hear a repeat of the previous episode.
